How have record companie's benefited in the digital age?

  • zero manufaturing costs for mp's
  • internet is cheap and effective use of promotion
  • mp3's can be encoded with digital rights management (coding so you can' share or copy)
  • talent scouts can trowl myspace/social networking for new artists

One big disadvantage is the fact that the competition from internet only labels is emerging i.e they have no staff,no overheads,no offices!

Chris anderson- editor of wired magazine

his theory is called the long tail theory. It is hits vs niche, shops only used to sell the big brands because of the costs of shelf space so they only displayed music which were big branded and most likely to sell.

convergence technology is a media term that i learnt in class today.
definition of it is that its all types of technologies coming together.

convergence of gaming: guitar hero, dj hero

Convergance of tv,internet and music industry: youtube with sensations like susan boyle! Britain's got talent, xfactor.

Ipad: touchscreen technology,maps,contacts,3g internet, can be viewed landscape or portrait, photo album apps, used as digital photo stand, email, youtube, over 14,000 apps, wifi, bluetooth, zooming in, flicking through with your fingers, split screen to see opened email and other messages in the inbox, photos can be emailed, synced and downloaded, slide show of pictures, you can watch any video, youtube, itunes, ipod, maps, notes, contacts, calender, homescreen, spot light search.

Too simular to the iphone, needed more new features that are not included in the iPhone. They should of changed the design of it to make it look like something new and exciting! you cant multitask.

There are 4 major record labels EMI, Warner music group, universal music group and SONY.They promote artists like Amy winehouse,Duffy, eminem etc.
There are many different challenges that these majr record labels experience for example people are short of money and the recession, people have lost interest in buying cds, People are downloading illegally, there are now independant artists who are producing music just as good as the major artists.
